My Girl by Kelly Bird

Kelly Bird is a self-taught photographer from the UK. She started her journey in 2007.

I find consistency difficult, my attention span is not what it should have been as a child and this has continued into my adult life. I could never stick to any clubs, dance, brownies, guides - nothing could ever hold my attention, I've never been overly popular and have found relationships with people hard for as long as I can remember. I was diagnosed with depression when I was 14 and for most of my life, I've felt like a bottomless cup trying to catch those fleeting drops of happiness; I'm still unsure of where I fit in life, a disconnect that I've had to learn to live with. I don't believe in coincidence and in 2007 I picked up my sister's Nikon cool pics and started snapping away, It was meant to be; 9 years on photography is a coping mechanism - a release from the frustrations I still feel today. I turned my interest to lifestyle and portrait photography when my daughter Ruby was born in 2012 and I hope to continue on this journey for as long as she allows me too.

I've struggled silently with motherhood from the day Ruby was born, My Girl is a project I started with her when she was 3; it's a way of connecting with her. This is our journey through creativity together; through the bad times and the good. Photography makes me happy and there is nothing quite like photographing your own child. This is my gift to her; a way of giving back.
