Abstracted Circles by Marissa J. Menefee

Marissa J. Menefee is a Chicago fine artist and freelance watercolor painter. Exploring the unique forms and colors of natural phenomena inspires Marissa to examine and interpret nature and our surroundings through abstract paintings. Surrendering to an obsessive attraction with circles, she createe a marriage between free flowing watercolor and the harsh, geometric boundaries of the circle, ultimately creating a constant flux throughout her work.

The seemingly simple circle presents to me endless opportunities and inspiration to create whimsical and abstract compositions. Multiple facets of the circle’s shape and capabilities grab me; a circle contains zero straight lines; a circle cannot be filled with other circles; a line that never ends, circles are often a symbol of infinity. When lost, it feels like we are going in circles. When there is great accomplishment, it feels as if we have come full circle.

An imaginative world filled with color and playfulness is translated through controlled, yet loose, watercolor and geometry. Exploring the unique forms and colors of natural phenomena inspires me to examine and interpret nature and our surroundings through my work. Surrendering to this obsessive attraction with circles, I create a marriage between free flowing watercolor and the harsh, geometric boundaries of the circle, ultimately creating a constant flux throughout my work.
